For most of the Indians, Tea or Chai (popularly) is more than just a beverage. One day, I took a stroll outside my college and asked Aslam Bhaiya if he earns enough by selling Tea for 6 days in a week. His revelations shocked my knowledge about tea consumption in my college. Aslam Bhaiya used to sell 150-200 cups of tea in a day. Each cup cost around 10 rupees. So, the seller earned around ₹1500-₹2000 a day. The expenses for a single day ranged between ₹1000- ₹1200 which included the costs of 10L milk, Kulhar( ₹1 a piece), 1 kg ginger and Chaipatti. Generally, Aslam made a profit of around ₹700- ₹900 per day. Meanwhile, the average salary of a Computer Science Engineer is 3.5 Lakh.

In India, if you are working on a laptop or fighting with your friend or in a social gathering, you’ll find a cup of tea to accompany you. Whether you visit a posh hotel or a roadside shack, you’ll always find the most loved beverage of India in a nearby person’s hand. But why is this obsession so strong? We have aggregated the most obvious reasons for India to be a tea-obsessed nation:

1. History

It was the British who brought tea to India. During the colonial period, the British needed to import tea from China out of their love for the beverage which caused dents in their treasury. So, the East India Company started tea plantations in the state of Assam. After Independence, India started exporting tea all over the world. Now, India is the second-largest tea producer in the world.

2. Taste & Flavor

After Independence, the local tea brands promoted and propagated the beverage all over the nation. The local sellers started experimenting with the milk and different spices to the traditional boiled tea leaves. The results were spectacular and led to an increase in the popularity of the beverage. Today, we have masala chai, noon chai, butter tea, green tea, black tea, herbal tea, iced tea, and lemongrass tea and many more varieties of tea culture.

3. Remedy To Many

If you are addicted to drugs, you’re a spoilt brat but no one gives a damn if you are addicted to tea. But why? Tea has oxidants that help the body to fight against the body’s version of rustiness. A study published in 2016 suggested that those who drank four or more cups of green tea daily had a 32 percent reduction in the risk of having a heart attack and lower levels of LDL cholesterol. Tea also helps in weight loss and protects bone loss. Most working men and women drink tea as a remedy to stress.

4. Evolving Tea Brands

The domestic market volume of tea in India is 12,000 CR. Gone are the days when brands like Tata Tea, Brooke Bond Red Label and Lipton Tea ruled the Indian tea market. With time, new tea brands have come to the fore and the old ones are still evolving. Until a few years ago not many would associate their daily cup of tea with exotic flavors like marigold and Kashmiri Saffron. Thanks to artisanal brands for taking the country’s tea-growing legacy forward.

5. Easy To Make And Readily Available

Name one thing except for Maggi which you can prepare in 2 minutes? It is tea of course. Tea is available in almost every big and small-sized store. Also, you don’t need much of the ingredients while preparing a tea; Ask Aslam Bhaiya. Also, tea is best suited for any social gathering. It may be your friends or relatives but every person is greeted by a cup of tea. It is a mark of respect for guests in the tea-loving nation.
